Buraka Som SistemaFaint of heart? Avert your glance. Portugal’s impetuous Buraka Som Sistema are lusty purveyors of the migrant Angolan clash-pop explosion that’s known as Kuduro. That is, in Anglo parlance: HARD ASS.
Buraka Som Sistema’s incandescent clamour – intensified by live shows starring African dance troupes and crackerjack rappers – was first immortalised on wax last year, when their volatile debut seven-inch, “Yah!”, pricked up myriad discerning ears.
Mobilised by the speedball phonetics of the iridescent MC Petty, and emblazoned by a cavalcade of European and African reverberations, “Yah!” hijacks the essence of BSS: their home-spun brawl of grime, house, techno, ghetto-pop and hip-hop is a fired-up, party-scrambling blast.
