| ...In which Edinburgh's glorious Dfrnt Drum DJs serenade us with 60s derangement, big hair and drone folk... Five compiled by The Dalek (Dfrnt Drum): Tina Turner - 'Whole Lotta Love' (Pastrami Man Re-edit) "Killer re-edit of an awesome cover of that ace Led Zeppelin hit by the woman with the crazy tonsils and the even crazier hair." Breaks Co-op - 'Settle Down' "Brand new from New Zealand and proof positive that their best homegrown product isn't all dub reggae. The roots on this one are equally rich, just in a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young kinda way instead, which is especially nice if you like your music a bit bearded." Schwab - 'DJs In A Row' (Andy Votel Remix) "Schwab have been causing a bit of a stir with their live shows and this brilliant psyche re-work by Manchester's Twisted Nerve supremo is causing an even bigger fuss on the dance floor." Map Of Africa - 'Dirty Lovin' "Copies of this proggy bit of stoner rock are now changing hands for silly money on Ebay. Might be something to do with the fact that Map Of Africa is the new project from disco don Harvey and ARE Weapons man Tom Bullock. 'Dirty Lovin'' is also pretty hairy (but great)." Jim Noir - 'My Patch' "I'm loving this sunny but twisted bit of Sixties-style harmonies and Noughties-style derangement from Mr Noir." Five compiled by Bobu San (Dfrtn Drum): Izuk Aitz, Katu Beltza - 'Txalopin Txalo' "Early 80s Basque folk. Good male/female vocal harmonies." Davy Graham - 'Skillett' "Vintage Sixties British folk/blues.." Talk Talk - 'I Believe In You' "A classic track." Silly Wizard - 'Carlisle Wall' "British folk and a traditional song (also recently covered by Alasdair Roberts on his album for Drag City). Drone folk, anyone?!" Montreal - 'Summertime' "Quite a jazz-folky cover of George Gershwin's standard on Seventies Candadian hippy folk dude Richie Havens' label, Stormy Forest." |
