In which Mogwai's erudite multi-instrumentalist bestows his current Top 10 tunes upon your lucky, lovely ears.

"In no particular order and ever-changing", he proclaims...

De Rosa: 'Father's Eyes'

"A Bellshill band. Indeed, I learned how to play music with the bass player from De Rosa in a crap old band we used to be in and I try to go and see them whenever they play. As if the tunes weren’t amazing enough the lyrics are absolutely tremendous as well. When one of your friends just happens to be in one of your top three bands, it makes you feel like you know really famous people."

Parliament: 'Come in Out of the Rain'

"This is a favourite among many of my friends and has been one of mine since I was a young teenager. The bass line doesn't change until the last 3 seconds of the song. That's the pure darts."

Pavement: 'Fight This Generation'

"It’s got one of those bits at the end that you wish went on a bit longer. A total grower."

Oneida: 'Tennessee'

"One time this song came on my iTunes right in the middle of listening to loads of electro on a 'night in'. I’ve had a soft spot for it ever since. I really like the organ, but I would wouldn’t I?"

The Band: 'King Harvest'

"A belter from one of my favourite bands with the most annoying name in music history:
'Who’s this?'
'Oh, it's the Band'
'Don’t be a smart arse'".

Bardo Pond: 'Montana Sacra II'

"From the last album, Ticket Crystals. I remember sitting somewhere on a tourbus with the rest of the band and crew and everyone who didn't already own it asking who the tune was by. That’s a rare thing."

100 Flowers: 'Poltergeists at Home'

"This old LA punk band used to be called The Urinals who were also amazing by the way. I only got into them about 6 months ago through a friend in the USA. They sort of remind me of Wire but definitely more American-sounding."

Super Furry Animals: 'Some Things Come From Nothing'

"I watched this from the side of the stage at Glastonbury, years ago. The Furries were on before us and they played so well that I got nervous enough that the whole experience of us playing is blanked out of my memory completely. Aye, they’re awfy good."

Grauzone: 'Eisbär'

"Not much - if anything - is known by this band, but it’s a beauty as long as you don’t mind the nightmarish jazz saxophone freeform at the end. It must be good though because as soon as I hear saxophones I usually get angry."

Can: 'One More Night'

"From Ege Bamyasi. It’d be nice if current bands took their influence from this tune rather than Coldplay and the associated clones. No chance of that though..."
